As do temples, home shrines house and protect the physical body of the gods. Some shrines have metal deity images fixed in them as in no. 1, while others are purchased empty and these allow great flexibility in placing a variety of metal images, framed photographs, and implements. Shrines also serve as thrones for gods. These shrines stand, for example, on four legs that take the form of lion's claws, as do the lion-shaped legs of thrones for kings.
