10. Krishna and Radha

Krishna in this porcelain image resembles Venugopala in the way he stands with one foot over the other (compare with nos. 5, 7). Quite distinct from the more heiratic images of these deities, these figures seem to have been conceived in European terms. Unlike the previous images (nos. 5, 6), they here share a single pedestal and tenderly clasp each other. Contact with European sculpture is also evident in their clothing, especially the swirling cloaks, and the knot of Krishna's dhoti. Radha's costume almost takes on the qualities of the many marble images in Queen Victoria's India.
