23. Standing Lamp with Peacocks

Oil lamps are lighted in the evenings to provide light in the evening and to burn flying insects and other impurities in the air. The flame invokes the presence of Agni, god of fire, in temple and home rituals. This standing lamp consists of a vertical column divided into tiers by five rings, alternately ornamented as peacocks with projecting heads and tails. The hollow receptacle at the top is filled with oil burnt with a cotton wick. The word devi (goddess) is incised below the lowermost peacock.
