67. Elephant and Rider
Glazed terra-cotta
Height: 14.5 cm
Twentieth century
Catalogue number 67.
Accession number 88.312.
This terra-cotta toy is a twentieth-century variation based upon earlier predecessors. Although the figure of the rider seems stylistically similar in its "timeless" abstraction to the previous goddess figurines (nos. 64-66), the elephant and canopy are quite contemporary. The object has been given a thin white glaze to create a curio that, in part, can better serve a contemporary tourist market. These clay elephants parallel or serve as prototypes for even more elaborate dokra elephants with howdahs.
